Artist’s Statement
“Art does not reproduce what we see. It makes us see.” Paul Klee
Painting is a meditative process for me. I tackle the bare canvass with a color vision and a simple under drawing. I watch and listen for the painting to tell me what it wants to become. I know the work is finished with me, when the image vibrates; when its space pops in and out; when forms and colors look happy together; when nothing needed is missing; when nothing unneeded remains; when it is impossible to see the whole picture at once; and when the painting tells me its name. Sometimes, the name comes out of nowhere. Sometimes, I review my collection of sentences; sentences that have grabbed me. I ask the painting which one fits just right.
These paintings do not reproduce things. They engage, invite, tease and act in a universe of feelings and energies. They show the viewer what they are doing. These paintings require meditative, visual listening to create them.
Just as a child at play gives pleasure to one who watches with a gentle heart, these paintings reward quiet visual attention.
